On the Cape Ai-Todor on the Aurora Cliff, the German oilman Baron von Steingel commanded to build at the place of an old wooden summer cottage a stone castle, the project of which was ordered to the Russian architect A. Sherwood. It was built in 1912, and in 1914 it was sold to a Moscow merchant Shalaputin, who opened a restaurant here. In the years of Soviet Union there was a holiday camp in the building for some time, then - the library of the health resort "Zhemchuzhyna". During the earthquake of 1927 the part of the Aurora Cliff came down, the observation deck in front of the building hung over the precipice. There appeared cracks in the walls of the castle; the sharp spires, which were crowning it, fell into the sea. The condition of the building was recognized as an accident one, and the access to it was closed. In 1968 the work for strengthening and partial reconstruction of the Swallow’s Nest was performed. After the reconstruction the access to the Swallow’s Nest was opened again.
