USS Vesuvius is a prototype gunboat (sometimes it is called "dynamite gun cruiser"). During its construction it was weaponed with three unmovable pneumatic guns, installed in the bow part. With the help of compressed air from a (70 atm) reservoir the shells, equipped with wet guncotton, were fired from those dynamite guns. The ship was supposed to be used in the battle with the coastal fortifications and also as a minesweeper: it was supposed that its shells by the explosion in the water would destroy mine barriers. The practical experience showed that the unique main battery of the ship had a lot of disadvantages: firing range was unsatisfactory and aiming method – complicated and inexact. "Vesuvius" took part in the Spain-American War; in 1898 it bombed Santiago de Cuba, accomplished special missions of the Commander-In-Chief, and also served as a dispatch vessel between Cuba and Florida
