The Cathedral of the Redeemer was built in the consideration of the intercession of Christ the Saviour in the critical historical period of Russia as a monument to the courage of the Russian people in the struggle with the invasion of Napoleon in 1812. In April 10, 1832 the Emperor Nicolay I approved the project of the Cathedral drafted by the architect K.A. Ton. The Emperor personally chose the place for the erection of the Cathedral of the Redeemer - on the bank of the Moscow-River, not far from the Kremlin. The Cathedral of the Redeemer was being built during almost 44 years. In 1860 the Cathedral of the Redeemer appeared for the first time before the Muscovites in its entire splendor. The Cathedral of the Redeemer was founded by the whole Russia and became a visual embodiment of its Glory, Faith and Grandeur, a witness of many historical events. In December 5, 1931 the Cathedral-monument of soldierly glory, the main Cathedral of Russia was savagely destroyed. For many years after the explosion the sinister pit gaped there in the place of the grand Cathedral. In 1989 it was adopted the decision on the restoration of the Cathedral of the Redeemer in the exact compliance with the previous building and in 1990 on the east side from the basin the first stone was laid. In December 2000 all the inner and outer finishing work was entirely completed. After its reconstruction the Cathedral of the Redeemer was turned into the cathedral of the metropolitan of Moscow, and the main holiday services are held here.
